There’s no secret that Illenium is on fire right now. From releasing his exhilarating beautiful album, Awake, to winning the Electronic Music Awards Remix of the Year this year has been quite the ride for DJ/Producer Nick Miller.
Prior to Lost Land’s inaugural year the Trillvo team got the chance to pick the brain of one of the hottest DJ’s in the game. From his upcoming tour to his thoughts on an all-bass music festival we got to talk all things music, inspiration and Lost Lands with the rising star.
Check out what Nick had to say:
You just released your sophomore album, Awake, and we are all loving it. How has the response from others been? Is it going as you expected it to?
It’s definitely exceeded my expectations. We had a huge first week and I can’t wait to see where it goes. I’m grateful for all the fans who bought or streamed the record. It means a lot!
That’s awesome! The Awake tour is about to kick off. Will your sets include a lot of your new music? Any surprises in store?
The focus will be on the new music but I also have a lot of new edits and mixes of older songs that will be played. There’s also some stuff I created solely for the tour.
Trillvo released a review on your album and when we asked Illenials their opinions we were told “Awake has inspired me as a producer” – what albums or artists inspire you?
When I first started out I’d say it was Bassnectar, Seven Lions, Porter Robinson, and Adventure Club. Lately Blink-182 and Angels & Airwaves are up there too.
What is some advice you’d give those up – and – coming producers out there that use your music as inspiration?
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Everyone started as a beginner. It took me a good two years once I started to really be happy with my sound.
Congrats on winning Remix of the Year for Say It! It seems like your career has skyrocketed over night – What would you say was your proudest moment this year?
This year I’ve had so many of those and they keep getting surpassed by the next: playing Red Rocks surrounded by my friends and family, EDC, Electric Forest, winning remix of the year, the Awake album and now the tour. It’s hard to pick just one and call it my proudest.
You’ve had a lot of great collabs. release this year. Personally, we are very excited for your collab. with Kill The Noise to drop. If you could collab. with any artist, who would it be?
Porter Robinson, Rezz, Odesza, MitiS, Adventure Club. I dig them all.
Throughout Awake, you stuck with your signature melodic bass sound but we know you have plans to go heavier in the future. What can we expect from your music going forward? We heard talks of a heavier EP in the works.
I do have some heavier stuff in the works. It’s refreshing to change gears and go back to some of that. I’ll still return to the melodic but it’s nice to do something different.
Your Lost Lands set has been highly anticipated and all over social media for a few months. Can we expect a heavier set than normal due to the “focus” of the festival being bass music?
There will be bass 🙂
– Note: Oh, there was bass. I have seen Illenium work his magic countless times and that was the hardest, filthiest set I’ve ever seen. I absolutely loved it. I even listed him as one of my favorite sets of the weekend. Check out our Lost Lands review here
Finally, what are your expectations for Lost Lands inaugural year? How do you feel about a festival based around bass music?
I’m stoked for it. There’s a ton of great artists on the lineup and I couldn’t be happier to be included! So much of today’s electronic music has roots in bass. It’ll be fun to experience a festival centered around that.
The Trillvo team is honored to have had the chance to catch up with Illenium and get a taste of what he has in store for fans. 2017, was an insane year for the young artist and we know his takeover is far from complete.
Nick has been previewing surprises and sneak peaks of his upcoming Awake tour and we couldn’t be more excited. Check out cities, dates and purchase tickets here
