If you think that listening to Barely Alive’s new album is just going to be some “new music,” oh boy, you are so wrong! This album is like a page out of every time travelers story you have ever read! So, if you are about that time traveling life, well then buckle up because we are about to take you on tour of Barely Alive’s Odyssey.

Barely Alive

The album starts off by opening with the titled track “Odyssey” which is track that has heavy bass/dubstep drops, all while mixing in a vintage 80s inspired sound. The track really sets the tone for the rest of our journey and is a preview for what “total destruction” is yet to come.

Now, if you are a long time Barely Alive fan, “Know About Me” is your track, it takes us back to the old days of the duo, and is a heavy dub-track you all be headbanging to sooner or later.

Don’t chicken out on me now, we still have plenty of traveling left as we lead into our next track, “Bad Thang” which features Splitbreed. It’s the fourth track on the album and is a high energy, old school hip hop influenced within a bass-face creating drop. After this track there is a series of heavy bass tracks that are all sure to please. I’m not going into details within all of them, but “Devil’s Tower” is one of those we recommend.

Hip-hop fans, this one is for you! “New Coupe- Ride Out” is a plain and simple rap track. However, it’s so much more than that. The track in itself takes you on a trip through time in hip-hop. Don’t believe me? Take a listen.

Now, let’s talk “Buddy,” when trying to decide our overall favorite for this album, let’s just say we were torn between one other track and this one. “Buddy” features Yves Paquet and is an absolute beautiful track. It carries all the elements expected in an R&B song from vocals, instrumentals, and heart and soul. This track is so beautiful and I would recommend you all to listen.

I want to skip back through space to track number three, “Deeper In Love”. If you are listening to album, I know! It’s not an EDM song in all honestly. It’s a funky throw-back R&B song and it is everything our hearts desire. Lyrically, it is breath-taking. The beat is equally parts soothing as it is funky-fresh. This whole track is just a breath of fresh air.

From start to finish this album delivers. The space influenced theme, mixed with the throw back into the 80s thru the early 2000s and today, and then add pure talent and musicality. This album was destined for greatness, and that’s why we are calling it one of the best of 2018.
