This month, we were able to snatch some of Space Wizard’s, a.k.a Mike Munnelly, time to talk about himself and what his future holds. Coming right off dropping his latest track, “Outer Worlds“, Space Wizard is developing his own unique sound that captives and manipulates you. We got a sneak peek of what struggles he’s dealt with, the creation of Space Wizard, and the goals he’s within reach of. Kick back, relax, and get to know the man behind the project.

So who exactly is Space Wizard, and how did Space Wizard get created?

Space Wizard

Space Wizard is actually a pretty recent invention. I started around two years ago under the name n0body_cares, making sad-boy Lo-Fi music. I was always making wubs on the side, but never actually released anything until about 6 or 7 months in my journey. Around the time I put out my first dubstep song is when the switch from n0body_cares to Space Wizard.

TRILLVO

I’m going to have to check it out, I’m constantly listening to Lo-Fi. So who is the man behind Space Wizard?

Space Wizard

The short blonde kid behind Space Wizard is actually from Philadelphia. When I was young, I moved to Texas and basically grew up in Amarillo. Growing up, I played a ton of hockey and even thought I was going to college with it until I hurt my shoulder. During that time, when I wasn’t playing hockey, I actually got really hooked on dubstep and music and the rest practically just fell in to place. It’s kind of crazy to think if I wouldn’t have gotten hurt, I probably never would have even known what a riddim was.

TRILLVO

I’m sorry about the shoulder injury, but if it wasn’t for that, you wouldn’t be where you are today. Always some positives to look at, right?

Space Wizard

That’s exactly how I look at it (laughs). It was definitely one of the best things to ever happen to me.

TRILLVO

Let’s talk some music. Outer Worlds just dropped on January 4th, I personally thought the track was dark and extremely trippy. How was the general reaction to Outer Worlds? What was your vision for the track?

Space Wizard

Man, Outer Worlds is a very strange track. I actually had the idea around a year ago, right after I saw Bassnectar play in Denver. A year later, I finally get the skill to the sounds out of my head and in to the DAW. I was able to finish it super fast, in like a day or so. From what I have seen, people like it. It got sent to a riddim network live stream and the dude running the stream lost his shit to it. It made me really happy to see. I never thought the wubs I make would bring that kind of emotion out of someone.

TRILLVO

I’m sure I can speak for everyone when I say we’re all thankful you waited to execute it perfectly the way you did. I hope I can hear it live someday.

Space Wizard

That chance may actually be coming really soon for my Texas friends. I can’t say anything yet, but there are things in the works that will bring me down there sooner rather than later.

TRILLVO

I’ll be keeping an eye out. Since we’re talking about shows, is there a dream show or festival you’ve been dying to get on?

Space Wizard

My dream festivals are things like Backwoods or Untz. Smaller, more intimate settings where the only goal is to get wonky in the Woods. That’s not to say that things like lost lands wouldn’t be a dream come true.

TRILLVO

Space Wizard at Lost Lands does have a nice ring to it. With you having so much coming and in the works, how are you handling it mentally?

Space Wizard

My mental health is surprisingly good. I used to struggle with depression and anxiety severely. I ama ctually able to say I am happy most times, and that’s a rare thing for me. I mean I used to be named n0body_cares, it was clear to see. Recently though, I have come to terms with who I am and my past and am incredibly excited for the future. I would also like to say that I know a lot of people out there struggle with anxiety and depression and just know you aren’t alone. Hit my line on any social media if you ever need a friend!

TRILLVO

I know you already hinted at something in Texas, but what else do you have coming soon?

Space Wizard

I actually have a ton of collabs coming out! One song with mlotik, another with Camnah, and one with someone I don’t want to mention just yet. Other than the collabs, I have some original things in the works. A track called “Captain Slo-Mo” and another slower, more melodic song. I’m really excited to share that last one with everyone, I’ve been pouring my soul into it. I can’t forget my Bassnectar and G Jones “Underground” flip, but that’s exclusive to my live sets.

TRILLVO

Wow, you’ve been going off lately then. Couple collabs and some new originals, huh?

Space Wizard

Sort of, yeah. I usually have trouble even getting a song started. I can’t forget the occasional releases on Spicy Bois and Looney Chunez. Both are super dope collectives that are a perfect fit for my music and have allowed me to meet some of my best friends.

TRILLVO

Okay okay, one final question. You have one night and 6 time slots to fill. If you could choose any combination of artists, what would your lineup look like?

Space Wizard

Wow, that’s so hard (laughs). I would definitely open with a Looney Chunez b2b set, then slide over in to meSo and some Spicy Bois for the wubs. Next would have to be a Getter set for sure, he’s my all time favorite artists. Then, I’d probably put a Peekaboo set into G Jones b2b Eprom. To the end the night, I think I’d get some Bassnectar.

TRILLVO

That’s an amazing lineup, I do love me some Bassnectar to end out a show or festival.

Space Wizard

Bassnectar will always be the perfect artist to end any festival with, I think.

TRILLVO

What would you have to say to someone reading this a year from now?

Space Wizard

To anyone reading this in the future, I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Every listener on this journey is mad important to me and it means the world someone is willing to listen to my little alien noises. Understand that I’ll always view my listeners as friends, not fans. My dms will stay open and I’ll always try to be there for anyone that needs me. Thanks for joining me on this wild and crazy adventure!
