We would like to formally introduce you to our Featured Artist for April, YAKO.

With this one were going international, as YAKO hails all the way from Hong Kong, China. He is DEFINITELY a name you’re going to be hearing more and more of in 2020. His latest track “SHENZEN” was a collab with our good friend Nitti Gritti that you may have heard by now. YAKO recently signed to Prodigy Artists, the management team who also oversees heavy hitters like NGHTMRE, Slander, Ghastly, Svdden Death and others.

2019 was also a HUGE year for YAKO, at ADE he was officially announced as one of three Chinese Monstercat signess; the others being Terry Zhong and Dexter King. YAKO also had one of every DJ’s dream accomplishments and played at EDCLV; being only one of two Chinese artists to perform that year.

So as you can see YAKO is clearly blazing his way into your eardrums and we couldn’t be more proud to introduce you to him, so let’s get to know the man a bit better!

Trillvo: What first got you into music?

YAKO: “I think it started when I took piano lessons when I was 5. Since then, I’ve always loved music and being able to create music.”

Who has inspired you to create that music?

YAKO: “When I was 15, I was in my first band. Being in the band and playing everyday inspired me to try and create my own music for us to play.”

I’m sure that helped a lot with developing your sound, what is your creative process like now being solo?

YAKO: “I start with a melody or some sound design. Then I move onto adding instrumental elements like piano or guitar. From their I just build on until I create a vibe I’m loving.”

Thats really awesome still staying true to the elements that you first got introduced to music in. Can you tell us more about how you  developed your own signature sound?

YAKO: “I’m not sure if it’s my signature sound but I always save a bunch of different sounds that I make and create my own sample pack or sound bank from them. Then when I’m creating a new track, I’ll go back to my sound bank to see what would be a cool addition. I also love to add real instruments to my tracks like the koto guitar.”

YAKO “It’d either be Boothaus in Germany or Creamfields Hong Kong, since it’s my hometown.”

Any pre-show rituals?

YAKO: Before each set I’ll do 20 push ups and some stretching.

What is in your bag that you always make sure to have?

YAKO: “Airpods , Juul , phone, hand sanitizer “

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

YAKO: “Honestly, I’d probably be a piano teacher or a lifeguard.”

What are some of your hobbies outside of music?

YAKO: “Hang out with my dog. When I’m on the road touring, I don’t get to spend time with him so whenever I’m home I try to spend as much time with him as possible.”

What kind of music do you listen to on your free time? Any favorites?

YAKO: “I listen to a lot of chill out music. John Mayer, Chet Faker, and Moglii are on my current playlist rotation.”

Something your fans would be surprised to know about you?

YAKO: “I hate coriander.”

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

YAKO: “Open up more platforms for talented artists to showcase themselves. There are tons of dope artists out there but no one knows about them because they get overlooked or don’t know how to get themselves out there.”

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

YAKO: “Stay calm and do what you can to believe in yourself”

What is one message you would give to your fans?

YAKO: “Stay safe, and I hope I can see you all soon when I can resume my tour, I miss them and partying with them.”

What goal are you wishing to accomplish in 2020?

I’ve been in the studio a lot since I’m on hold from touring at the moment. I’m really excited for what I have created and can’t wait to release them and my new EP. Also trying to decrease the negativity in my life and focus on the positives.

YAKO has made it his mission to share Chinese electronic music with the world – in his own words:
“I believe that electronic music is a universal language for everyone, and it’s time to show the entire world how a Chinese artist is capable of inspiring people pursuing their own dreams of making music, or any form of art”
