Detroit based house producer MASTERIA had an astronomical breakout year in 2019 playing alongside Dance Music’s biggest names including Alesso, Malaa, Griz and a #1 Release on Beatport. Riding the momentum of last year’s energy, he hit the new year high with multiple releases on well respected record labels such as Insomniac Records, Mau5trap, and Confession Label.

Last October we had the pleasure of sitting down with MASTERIA at Freaky Deaky Festival and I am so excited to have him back as our Artist of the Month this year! Since then he has taken the scene by storm with his signature dark house sound that blurs together heavy bass elements with groove inducing house.

We caught up with MASTERIA on Zoom and he talks about growing up in Detroit and how living in a major tour stop city has had an impact on his music journey.

Who/what has been your inspiration for producing?

All the artists who paved their way creating house and techno before me inspire me the most. Especially those early techno innovators who came out of Detroit, but I find inspiration in everything – in art, movies, people, everything.

What has been your favorite performance of your career?

Performing at Spring Awakening this past year was one of my favorites. It was amazing to share the stage with so many other talented DJ’s, as well as connect with all the fans at the festival all weekend.

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Running a badass taqueria.

For those of you that don’t know, MASTERIA is incredibly passionate about his Mexican restaurant concept that includes chips and salsa and house every weekend. I don’t know about you, but MASTERIA, margs, and house music sounds like that absolute Monday move.

Later on in the interview, MASTERIA spoke to his experiences and hardships of pursuing his dream through music. He found himself burnt out from the long hours of working at a tech start-up and escaping through house music.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Dreams only work if you do.

It’s your last set of your life. What is your opening and closing with?

Tchami – Afterlife

Its no wonder a Tchami track was chosen, as MASTERIA has had multiple releases on his Confession Label, including his 2020 “Underground EP” with Ekonovah.
